Aims and Objectives

AMRRIC aims to:

  • Support existing animal health and management programs that are consistent with AMRRIC ‘s policies and philosophy, and facilitate the development and introduction of additional programs.
  • Build the capacity of  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and local governments to sustainably manage their own animal health and welfare issues
  • Build awareness, capability and standards of the health care professionals and Indigenous community employees who are currently engaged in animal health and welfare support and/or are interested in gaining more knowledge of the issues
  • Consolidate and strengthen AMRRIC through developing and strengthening governance, policies, appropriate systems, infrastructure, relationships and financial sustainability.

AMRRIC’s objectives are to:

  1. Implement AMRRIC’s sustainable, evidence-based model of companion animal care in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and other stakeholders.
  2. Work with stakeholders to encourage Indigenous communities to be engaged in culturally appropriate, sustainable animal management programs
  3. Develop capacity building within local, territory/state and federal governments, NGOs and remote communities to assist them to develop policies and strategic frameworks to deliver animal management and control programs
  4. Facilitate the provision of a range of culturally sensitive and professionally accountable education and training programs and conferences for veterinarians, environmental/public health workers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and community employees
  5. Work with stakeholders to develop principles / protocols and accreditation for health professionals and other individuals that deliver animal health and welfare programs in Indigenous communities
  6. Develop a national database to track and inform remote community animal management activities
  7. Heighten and broaden community awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and animal welfare and management issues through advocacy and communication programs
  8. Encourage and facilitate appropriate and culturally sensitive research programs to underpin and inform effective animal management programs
  9. Build AMRRIC itself as a sustainable, effective and accountable non-government organisation.
  10. Make a contribution towards the national effort to close the 17-year life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
