Garma 2010

 Garma Festival

August 6-9th 2010, Gulkula, Arnhemland

AMRRIC was honoured to be accepted as presenters at the Garma Key Forum.  EO Julia Hardaker and Education Officer Sophie Constable both gave presentations, kindly introduced by Professor Henry Atkinson of Monash University.  Professor Atkinson's particular areas of interest are  Indigenous/human rights and education, so it was a privilege to hear him speak of dog issues in these terms.

At our information stall during the day we made lots of connections with remote community members, health and education professionals, and we even ran into AMRRIC members Andrew Dunn (and family) and Minister Jenny Macklin! It was a great opportunity to engage with people living and working in Indigenous contexts, surrounded by the beauty and culture of Gulkula. Next year’s Garma will focus on Health, and we highly recommend attending. If the registration fee is too steep on top of the airfares, consider applying to volunteer through Indigenous Community Volunteers (our office-mates!), who will cover your airfares, attendance fees, camping and meals.  Jan recommends the ICV experience!!
