A couple of years ago, I approached a publisher about the idea of writing a book about animal abuse and how we can help the human and animal victims and they were keen. I then had the unusual situation of having a book contract before I had published any scientific article on my research. Seeing animal cruelty in practice is very upsetting but I realise that these animals are lucky as at least they are seeing a vet. I have no doubt that the number of animals and people who are suffering in their own homes is much higher than what we know about. I’m hoping my book will be of interest to a range of people who encounter human/animal abuse – vets, vet nurses, shelter staff and animal workers, as well as cruelty inspectors, lawyers, social workers. Animal cruelty can happen anywhere and has happened throughout history, there isn’t likely to be any quick fix solution but I feel raising awareness of it is part of the battle. Unfortunately vets are taught little or nothing about recognising signs of animal abuse or about how human interpersonal violence can involve animal cruelty.
If anyone would like to contribute their experiences with animal abuse/neglect or their thoughts about this book please contact me.
