Joining Forces – Supporting Roper Gulf Regional Council at Borroloola

Owners of Pepsi the dog, Rahiri and Manaia help to remove ticks with AMRRIC volunteer vet Dr Linda Bradbury

In April AMRRIC joined forces with Roper Gulf Regional Council during their week-long companion animal desexing and anti-parasitic program in Borroloola. The program was led by Roper Gulf Regional Council veterinarians Dr Sam Phelan and Dr Anna Sri. As this was the first time that the council had provided services in the area, AMRRIC assisted by supporting the program with education, data collection and the provision of three veterinary volunteers.

It was a great week with a total of 47 animals desexed. A full community companion animal census was also carried out with the support of local liaison John Aidi. John was a huge asset to the team, coordinating logistics to ensure an efficient and thorough census, and assisting AMRRIC Program Manager Dr Jan Allen with antiparasitic treatment administration for the entire dog population.

To support the veterinary program, AMRRIC Education Officer Courtney Falls provided school education sessions on dog feelings, needs, empathy, and personal hygiene when handling animals. Seven education session were delivered to the school, with three of the classes visiting the surgery site with their students. The students were highly engaged, especially during their visit to the surgery. A number of students even stayed back after school to watch and learn as further procedures took place.

Funding from the McArthur River Mine will enable the Roper Gulf Regional Council vets to deliver biannual veterinary services for the next three years in Borroloola. Ongoing support for veterinary services in remote communities is vital for sustained and long term benefits. AMRRIC is proud of our strong relationship with Roper Gulf Regional Council and thanks McArthur River Mine for their support of this program. A big thanks too to our wonderful volunteers Dr Linda, Dr John and vet nurse Nicole!
