The team returns to Cherbourg

UQ's School of Veterinary Science, Darling Downs Public Health Unit, Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council and AMRRIC team busy taking surgery bookings, registering animals and administering donated parasite treatments at the Community Vet Visit BBQ

Following on from a successful inaugural visit in 2016, the team consisting of staff from AMRRIC, The University of Queensland School of Veterinary Science, and Queensland Health Darling Downs Public Health Unit returned to Cherbourg in October 2017 to deliver a tailored veterinary and education program in collaboration with Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council.

In total, a further 62 dogs (and four cats) were desexed, bringing the running tally up to 121 dogs desexed over the two programs thus far.  Once again, broad spectrum parasite treatments were generously donated by Boehringer Ingelheim (formerly Merial), ensuring that the community’s dog and cat population were treated for both internal and external parasites.  Additionally, this year all animals were desexed were also vaccinated, thanks to the generosity of Boehringer Ingelheim.  The community response to the education program was fantastic, with many surgical bookings taken and new animals registered at the Community Vet Visit BBQ.  The outcomes of last year’s school visit were also clearly evident with great retention of animal health and management knowledge from the kids during this year’s lessons.  Some local media coverage of the program – furthering the messages of responsible pet ownership- can be found here.

Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council Environmental Health Worker Steven Hill was pivotal to the development and success of the Cherbourg Animal Management Program, but tragically passed away shortly after the 2017 program.  Stevie was a huge asset to the team and will be greatly missed, but always remembered for his dedication to improving the health of his community, his thoughtfulness and his loyalty.  The AMRRIC team extend our sincere condolences to Stevie’s family and community.  We are comforted to know that his legacy will continue at Cherbourg.
