Dog Mob Cat Crew strikes again for National Science Week 2023

AMRRIC’s education program, Dog Mob Cat Crew, was thrilled to be able to participate in Australia’s National Science Week again for 2023, this time visiting Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic Primary School in Wurrumiyanga, on Bathurst Island in the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory.

This education program was focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) education and promotion and, keeping in the theme for this year’s Science Week, looked at the innovations in animal science that can help lead to improved outcomes for remote community environmental, animal, and human health.

The exciting program saw students in the primary school participate in kinesthetic learning activities that included animal anatomy, parasite movements and control, zoonotic disease management, and the use of companion animal surveillance measures in remote communities to contribute to improving these health outcomes.

AMRRIC has participated in National Science Week for three years running now and we were even fortunate enough to be the recipients of a National Science Week award last year for our work in promoting science and STEM education in remote communities! It is thanks to the continued support of Inspiring Australia, a national organisation dedicated to science promotion Australia-wide, that we have been able to participate in Science Week education programs. Education is a pillar in AMRRIC’s approach to improving One Health outcomes in communities and continued education is key to seeing results from this strategy. We hope to be able to continue science promotion and education in remote communities for many years to come.

This year’s Science Week saw a wonderful Dog Mob Cat Crew education program and a huge thank you goes out to all that made the program possible with their support including Inspired NT, Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic Primary School staff and students, and Wurrumiyanga Community.
