Despite the many benefits of pet ownership, any time people and animals share the same environment, there is the potential for diseases to spread. Diseases that can make both people and animals sick are known as zoonotic diseases. These diseases can have a major impact on both the health and wellbeing of both people and animals.

In 2022, AMRRIC had the pleasure of working with students from Macquarie University’s Medical Sciences Capstone/PACE Subject on their major industry partnership project. As part of the course, the students were asked to help develop fact sheets and infographics to explain the potential impacts of zoonotic diseases on the health of people and animals living in rural and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. These resources are intended to help improve community awareness and understanding of the linkages between the health of people and animals.
