AMRRIC is expanding its training offerings to support organisations and communities to build local capability in animal health and management in remote Indigenous communities.
For more than 25 years, AMRRIC has worked in partnership with remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia, supporting the health and wellbeing of people, animals, Country and culture through practical, community-based animal management approaches.
Through this work, a consistent challenge has emerged: there have often been limited opportunities for training that reflects the realities of remote community contexts and supports the development of a sustainable, locally based workforce.
Many communities and organisations continue to face barriers including workforce turnover, limited access to relevant training pathways, and reliance on external providers to deliver ongoing animal management activities. At the same time, the importance of locally embedded capability has become increasingly clear — not only for animal health and welfare, but also for community safety, environmental health and biosecurity preparedness.
In 2011, AMRRIC partnered with Regional Councils in the Northern Territory to support the establishment of the Animal Management Worker (AMW) Program. This work highlighted the need for training that was practical, culturally relevant and aligned to the operational realities of remote Indigenous communities.
Since then, AMRRIC has continued to advocate for and contribute to the development of training pathways that better support remote community animal management roles.
Today, AMRRIC delivers both accredited and non-accredited training designed to strengthen local capability and support sustainable program delivery.
Our training includes practical topics such as:
- animal health and care
- community safety and dog behaviour
- biosecurity awareness
- animal management program delivery
- education and community engagement
- understanding links between animal health, human health and environmental health through a One Health approach
AMRRIC’s accredited training is delivered in partnership with Ninti Training Ltd (RTO 70018), an Indigenous-owned Registered Training Organisation with extensive experience delivering training in remote and regional contexts.
Together, AMRRIC and Ninti Training are working to support training pathways that are practical, flexible and relevant to the organisations and communities delivering animal management activities on the ground.
Training can be delivered in a range of formats depending on organisational and community needs, including:
- on-ground practical delivery in community
- integration with existing animal management activities
- workshops and targeted capability development
- flexible online learning for coordinators and managers
AMRRIC’s approach to training is grounded in partnership and long-term capability building. Our focus is not simply on delivering training, but on supporting organisations and communities to strengthen sustainable, locally led animal management systems over time.
