One Health Research Projects

Our One Health approach recognises the inextricable links between human, animal and environmental health and wellbeing. By working with remote Indigenous communities to improve the health of their pets, we are helping to create healthier, safer and happier communities.

One Health Background

To work in closing the gap of disadvantage and inequality in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing requires a truly holistic and interdesciplinary approach that acknowledges the interconnection between humans, animals, environment and country.

The main objectives of the One Health Research Project are to:

  1. Develop and implement a framework to identify and document, community-identified One Health research priorities that reflect the needs Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  2. To develop and expand research networks and partnerships to allow for broader One Health research engagements that address Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islander community-identified needs and research priorities.
  3. Build a culturally and contextually appropriate One Health knowledge base that reflects the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, their people and their companion animals.

The main objectives of the One Health Research Project are to:

4. Develop a framework and resources for knowledge translation to improve awareness and understanding on relevant One Health issues in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the broader research community.

5. To inform and advocate for One Health policies and resources that address the areas of greatest need in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

6. To develop internal resources and procedures to facilitate collaborative research collaborations and partnerships that adhere to the highest level of ethical research practices in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
