  • Communities we’ll visit: This wonderful program is delivered annually in cooperation with our partners at Pilbara Meta Maya Regional Aboriginal Corporation. The program will visit four communities in the west Pilbara region of WA, including Yandeyarra, Warralong, Goodabinya and Irrungadji.
  • Project Team: You will work with experienced AMRRIC veterinary staff, as well as Pilbara Meta Maya’s Environmental Health team.
  • Role/Scope of Program: The team will be delivering a surgical desexing program to each of the four communities.  Under the guidance of AMRRIC’s Principal Vet and Vet Nurse, the volunteer can expect to assist with:
    • Set-up and pack down of temporary surgery clinic spaces,
    • Patient admission, preparation, and recovery,
    • Monitoring anaesthesia for spay and castrate procedures for cats and dogs,
    • Surgical kit management,
    • Administering anti-parasitic treatments,
    • Supporting the provision of animal first aid where required,

Please note, while this is a surgical program, any urgent animal welfare presentations requiring treatment beyond the capacity of the field hospital will be referred to the nearest vet.
  • Qualifications required: All volunteers for this program will be required to have a current WA Working with Children Clearance (we can assist in obtaining this). Vet Nurses must hold a Veterinary Nursing or Technician qualification and be eligible for registration with the Veterinary Practice Board of WA.
  • Travel Information: The volunteer will be responsible for their own travel to and from Port Hedland and need to be ready to depart Hedland by late morning on Sunday 10 May. The surgical program will commence in Yandeyara on Monday 11 May and will finish up in Irrungadji on Wednesday 20 May. The team will drive back to Port Hedland on Thursday 21 May ready to fly out that afternoon/evening.
Some assistance with flight costs will be available to the successful vet nurse applicant.
  • Accommodation/Food: All accommodation during the program (Saturday 9 May – Thursday 21 May) is provided at no cost to the volunteer, including in Port Hedland on Saturday 9 May if required. AMRRIC offers all volunteers a modest travel allowance to help cover food costs.
